I’m primarily a portrait photographer – whether I shoot fashion pictures on locations or plant portraits in my studio. When I prepare to make a portrait, I have a rough mental image of the result and then plan accordingly. Through the choice of location and the use of lighting and sometimes props, I try to create a narrative around my subject. Although the staging can be controlled, the liaison is sometimes unpredictable, often collaborative, always challenging. Born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1948, the city remains my base. After studying film making in London in the mid-1970’s, I returned to Cape Town to open a studio. For all intents and purposes I’m a veteran.
Besides portrait photography I do love taking travel pictures and my work has been published in numerous magazines, amongst others: Bon Appétit; Condé Nast Traveler, Cosmopolitan, Die Zeit, ELLE, ELLE à table, Food Illustrated, Food & Wine, Food & Home; Harpers & Queen, House & Leisure, National Geographic Traveller, Tatler, Travel & Leisure, Visi and Wallpaper.
